What size of outdoor lighting is appropriate? I have builder size and grade right now, which translates to small. I have been looking online, but everything seems huge! Is there a proper scale to use?
– Brenda P., Phoenix, Arizona
Yes, Brenda, there is a scale; bigger is better for sure.
Remember, lights will be observed from at least fifty feet away! A simple rule of thumb to keep in mind is the height of your outdoor fixture should be based on the height of the door or opening. If a single side lantern is used, the piece should be approximately one-third the height of the door. If two lights are used on either side of the door, the pieces used can be slightly smaller, say one-quarter of the height of the entryway. Also, the height for hanging is sixty-six inches from the threshold. I hope that helps.
