Scam Alert – Beware!

“SMiShing” is the cell phone equivalent to “Phishing,” which is also known as “brand spoofing” or “carding”, text messages that lead you to a counterfeit website trying to get your personal information, using SMS. This new form of identity theft is targeting cell phone users in which Internet scammers use to “fish” for consumers’ financial information and password data using fake company e-mails and Websites. The scammers send consumers text messages that appear to be from well-known companies that contain links to Web pages that have been disguised to look nearly identical to legitimate companies’ sites.

The phony text messages create the impression that there is an urgent need for the consumer to take immediate action to update personal information to avoid some threat or risk to the consumer’s personal accounts. The illegitimate Websites ask consumers to enter current financial and personal information — such as user IDs, Social Security numbers, bank or credit card account numbers and ATM passwords.
