Get In On Today’s Hottest Trend: Decorating With Natural Elements

As the green culture grows, more and more home buyers are looking for spaces that feature natural elements in their decorating and construction. This trend, which the Chicago Tribune recently named the hottest in home decorating, features natural elements, textures and finishes in furniture, surfaces and accessories to create a desirable and au courant space.

According to Elaine Griffin, New York interior designer and author of Design Rules, “We really want to see the handprint of nature in our homes now. It’s one of the biggest trends for the year, and it’s going to stay with us for a while.”

Even if the houses you stage do not boast stationery organic elements like rock walls or exposed brick, it is still possible bring the beauty of the outdoors to every room in the house with smaller natural elements including trees, plants, succulents, cacti, rocks and wood. Look for high-quality artificial options that use a combination of real and fabricated elements. These alternatives are ideal for re-use and storage and are often indiscernible from the ‘real thing.’

In the dining room, display formal table settings along with a centerpiece of blooming bulbs planted in a rectangular, rough-hewn wood planter with moss accents.

Create tabletop vignettes with terrariums or felled tree limbs filled with succulents, moss and rocks. Pair your arrangement with gardening books and small animal figurines to create an eclectic greenhouse look.

In the kitchen or sunroom, hang an interesting barn wood frame or trellis accented with driftwood and brimming with succulents in a variety of shapes, textures and colors. Consider painting walls white or ivory to create a calm and clean back drop.

In larger spaces incorporate screens constructed from multiple trees limbs like curly willow, which has a unique shape for added interest and also helps define the living space.

In entryways or corners, arrange tall shoots of bamboo or river birch in found or reclaimed vessels, such rusted buckets and troughs.

And don’t forget spaces like bathrooms, where you can add small pieces of driftwood, sea shells, coral and starfish to shelves, countertops or small containers. Painting the back of shelves a vibrant color will make an all-white display pop.

Embrace the hottest decorating trend and infuse your staging efforts with natural elements to create warm, comfortable living spaces that will appeal to home sellers and buyers alike.
