The RESA Greater Capital Area Chapter has been working with Doorways for Women and Families in Crisis for the past 2 years. Last year the chapter volunteered at one of the safe houses to paint some of the client areas (a children’s playroom) as well as some furniture that was being spruced up.
“Doorways for Women and Families envisions a day when all people in our community live free of violence and have safe and stable housing. Their goal is that every family that walks through their door walks through another – into a safe home of their own.”-
This year, the chapter made a commitment to not only have a strong presence at the fundraising breakfast in October, but also made a chapter donation at the breakfast. The moving stories of women who have had life changing experiences, with the support of Doorways, really solidified the commitment to help as much as possible.
Additionally, the Doorways staff voiced their biggest need this year which was to redesign their office and conference space for client and donor meetings as well as daily work. The chapter made the decision to do a raffle to raise money to purchase furniture and accessories through their wholesale accounts, and volunteer their time and design talents to see the project come to life.
The raffle prize was a Welcome Home basket in keeping with the mission of Doorways. The basket, worth over $260, was filled with welcome home items like fall decor, throw pillows and blanket, a nice bottle of wine and a $100 gift card to the new HomeSense store. Each member sold raffle tickets to their realtor partners with the idea that the realtor could gift it to a new homeowner and also friends and family. The total raised was over $1600 with donations still being received post drawing. The winner was Stephen Fowler of Fulcrum Properties Group.
The chapter members will be meeting with the Doorways staff at the end of the month to prepare a design plan and work in conjunction with contractors (who will be donating their time or working for reduced fees) to complete the remodel in the next several months.
