Take a Stand: Create Visual Impact with Inspirational Planters

I think it is safe to say that incorporating plants in any room décor instantly adds character, form and color. Plants are eloquent at tying together a decorating theme; camouflaging flaws, like electrical cords, ripped wallpaper and other eyesores; and drawing attention to remarkable architectural features.

As freshhome.com stated, “Plants bring natural beauty to our living spaces. By creating texture and balance, a room or patio can be transformed into an environment that comforts and welcomes.”

What can often be taken for granted, however, is the container the plant calls its ‘home.’

Seasoned designers are adept at choosing stands and planters that coordinate with a room’s decor and add interest above and beyond the plant itself. The shape, size and material of the container can certainly add to (or detract from!) the appeal of any room—a detail that communicates your attention to detail and commitment to your client.

Here are some inspirational ideas:

  • Don’t shy away from repeating the same container in different sizes within a grouping. They can fill larger empty spaces and the repetition of pattern is confidently reassuring. Why settle for one planter when two will do?

  • Hairpin legs are one of today’s hottest decorating trends. Both rustic and industrial in nature, planters that incorporate these elements are versatile in a variety of decors. Hairpin legs come in a variety of heights which can lend themselves to floor displays as well as tabletops and on shelves.

  • Look for unusually-shaped containers that can be mounted to walls for an unexpected surprise. Planters that are unique in shape are often best filled with simple arrangements that do not overwhelm the appealing lines of the planter.

  • Fill large empty wall spaces with natural elements instead of artwork. Tin containers and weathered wood can lend themselves to a variety of décor.

  • What’s going on beneath the surface can be just as fascinating as what springs from the soil. Consider incorporating glass containers that showcase soil and intricate root systems, especially interesting in orchids. Suddenly, the plant becomes a conversation piece (especially when they discover it’s not real!).

Even small containers can be stuffed full of myriad plants for a lush, yet controlled, effect. This arrangement contains areca grass, staghorn and maidenhair ferns, wild grass and asparagus (whew!) all in a compact metal planter.

  • Concrete isn’t just for sidewalks anymore. Incorporate this industrial element for well-grounded and sturdy arrangements.

  • Match the height and silhouette of the planter with the stature of the plant, as illustrated in the two photos below. The tall, slender yucca plant is better suited to the taller version of the planter, while the smaller scale succulents are more appropriate for the shorter planter.
