How Do I Price a Virtual Staging Consultation?

At RESA we field questions from home stagers throughout North America on a daily basis, from where to get training, how to keep up with inventory, where to find clients, the best resources for contracts and more! For our Ask The Experts Blog series we take some of these questions to experts in our industry to get their advice.

A recent question was submitted by a home stager in New Jersey, “I would like to know if I would price a virtual staging consultation the same price as an in-person one?”

Kristie Barnett, aka The Decorologist, founder of the Expert Psychological Staging® method and a  RESA Accredited Education Provider shares her insight on the topic of virtual consultations.

I have done both staging and paint color consultations virtually for years now. Some people contact me from more remote areas where they may not have access to a local stager. Others follow me on social media and want my help, but are located halfway across the country.

“I charge the same fee for a virtual consultation as I do for an in-person one. There’s no reason to charge less for a virtual consultation. In fact, it can be more difficult than the experience of walking through the home in real life. I highly recommend that you have a good bit of in-person staging consultation experience before offering it long distance.

What works best for me is charging a set fee for a phone consult (up to 2 hours), which is paid prior to the appointment. I have them send multiple photos in good natural lighting of every room, and we use the consultation time to “walk through” the photos together via phone in front of our computers and identify what needs to be done to ready the property to sell. You can of course use Zoom or FaceTime, but phone + Google photos on a laptop still works well for me!”
