Shell and Alexis were at the Las Vegas World Market this week, working hard to bring in wholesale exhibitors as resources for our members. Shell had several meetings scheduled, in hopes to bring on a greenery/floral resource as well as new furniture providers.
RESA embraces the new interactive online publication AspiredHOME, who through videos, blog links, and showcasing staging work, shares a common goal of raising the industry awareness to new heights by public education and inspiration. With a dedicated section for RESA to share industry news and updates, announce upcoming events and share other trade association tools and publications, the trade association is capitalizing on an opportunity to be a voice for the industry forecasting they will reach thousands of homeowners, agents and design professionals who subscribe to this free magazine.

AspiredHOME Magazine is an international online magazine with a large team of staging and decorating technical editors from around the world. Dedicated to being a voice of both the staging and decorating world, the goal is to produce two magazines in 2017 and expand to a quarterly magazine in 2018. Subscription is free. And the magazine will host an online directory of home stagers, decorators, real estate photographers, agents and trades businesses with a link to their websites, for as low as $27 an issue.
Cynthia Riegle of Riegle Home Staging had the honor of staging a $20M historical manor, The Rapidan Estate, owned by Governor Jim Justice, along with the assistance of Johnathan Miller of Jsquared Interior Staging & Design. Riegle, an Expert Psychological Stager™ in the Richmond VA RESA chapter, brought in an eclectic mix of antiques and contemporary furniture to balance the old world architecture of this estate, which was auctioned off on June 20th.
Todd McAllister, a rockstar RESA home stager, and owner of Portlands very own home staging empire OnStage shares nuggets of wisdom on occasion in our members only RESA Facebook group. We rounded up our top 10 favorites to share with you!
- If you have hurricane candle holders and run out of triple wick candles, try this idea. Fill the deep hole that you put the candle in with some type of plastic… (I’m always trying to save on materials)
Then cover the bottom with small bags of polished stones (I find them at the local Dollar Tree for $1 per bag).. instead of using one candle, fill with a grouping of various sizes of candles.. (the candle grouping pictured came from IKEA for $5.99)
- Painting Trick! When painting and the ring of the paint can collects paint and builds up, simply get a nail and hammer and punch small holes in the ring of the can.. the paint will drip back into the can.
- Missing Lids! Have any of these hanging around? You know, the canister/ jar with the lid that is MIA or been dropped…. well, hot glue the lids on them.
- Money Saving Headboard. Steal this money saving idea.. we had a lot of these old dark brown slat headboards.. we got inexpensive painters canvas, got foam core to cover up the slots then cut the canvas to size.. we used a staple gun to attach the canvas to the frame….we are able to get about 3 headboards out of each canvas…then steam out the wrinkles…..
- Don’t ever be afraid to change how you do things. We often find that what we were doing was maybe not the most efficient… for example.. we used to use these Rubbermaid carts to pull accessories.. we came across these taller rolling racks with the ability to store more accessories… preventing multiple trips back and forth…
- Job Organization. We’re always improving how we do things.. we are now using these stanchions our warehouse manager found.. since we have multiple jobs going out daily, this is a very visible way to separate each job to reduce confusion about what goes with what project..
- Always have spring rods in your inventory.
Builder: ” since this house is next to a garbage enclosure, can you put up some sheers to block the view, and not put any holes in the walls?”Me: “Yes, not a problem… I have spring rods that will hold the sheers..”
- A QUICK FIX….Oops.. I forgot this is the side table with a drawer that falls out….? If you turn it upside down and simply insert a small screw into the bottom, it will act as a stop.
- Another learning opportunity…..Like everyone in staging land, I get caught up in the pretty… but stop to think about the abuse our inventory takes.. sometimes the pretty gets damaged easily… #NotASmartBuy
- A GREAT ANALOGY FROM TODD MCALLISTER, when you are asked why people need to stage. Not long ago I was asked by an agent what the point of staging is and why people do it? He was a non believer. I equated it to food styling.. when you go to a restaurant and look at the menu, you see all of the items that look amazing. Perfectly placed on a plate or in a bowl. Each item is dripping in sauce or gravy, and the chicken is buttery looking and juicy… it’s the magic of a food stylist and amazing photography.
We all know that the items we order never actually look like the photo. But it’s the power of suggestion and photography that makes us order the item.. it’s the same with staging. Our job is to make a home look it’s absolute best for the buyer. The images they see online will get them in the door.
After I explained it to him, he then understood why staging is so very important.

I am a: Mom and MIL to four of my very favorite people, Gigi to the most fantastic five grandchildren anywhere, blessed to be the wife to Dave, who is the kindest and most well-meaning man I know, home stager whose heart smiles every time she stages a house, business owner of an expanding staging and redesign company, and a cow lover, as I grew up on a dairy farm and loved that life. I love staging because: The immediate gratification is always a boost, which is associated with the most fun part of a staging business – the actual time staging. But there is nothing better than clients who rave about how the home looks after we’ve been there; quick results, such as a home selling in less than a week (especially when it sat for months prior to staging!); or when the seller has multiple offers because more than one buyer has emotionally fallen in love with the house and “just has to have it”! I have always loved, loved, loved the staging part of my business, but now that the business is growing and I have a super team that also love staging, I’m learning to enjoy the business side of business much more.
My style is: whatever it needs to be to sell the home We usually lean toward a contemporary design. I wish we could do more modern design, but in our neck of the woods, we have many farms and there is a very conservative background for many folks here. So, when staging occupieds, we stage a bit ‘eclectic’, incorporating our updated furnishings with the seller’s furniture. Sellers are ALWAYS amazed at the transformation in an occupied home we’ve staged. Vacants are more contemporary, but keeping with the overall style of the home.
Good staging should: always be about the buyer walking in the front door!
Right now I’m obsessed with: sleep, going to grandkids’ sporting events, growing the business, and relaxing vacation time!
Staging is: THE important partnership with realtors, investors, builders and home sellers. The art and science of perfecting each given property to cause positive emotional response in the potential buyers’ minds. Being able to say, “We love what we do”.
It’s my goal to: form a partnership with my daughter-in-law Amie Howes, grow this business to multiple locations and be the ‘go to’ staging and redesign company in the areas that we now – and will – serve.
